The new BESS unit, which will be expandable to 1MW, will accommodate IB’s large-format lithium batteries and battery management system (BMS), an inverter, and a control/communications system housed in a 40ft mobile container to provide renewable energy integration and smart grid support.
International Battery will join forces with an inverter company to develop the energy storage system by leveraging its aqueous manufacturing process that fabricates the battery cells using a water-based process instead of the common use of large quantities of organic solvent chemicals.
The company has already begun the preliminary design work on the 800kWh BESS unit and expects the system to be ready for initial testing by the second quarter of 2011.
International Battery president and CEO Dr Ake Almgren said that International Battery thanks PEDA for this grant enabling the company to undertake its largest energy storage project to date.
