The project, known as Mahatma Gandhi Thermal Power Project, comprises 2 units of 660MW each. The units, which are based on super critical technology, reportedly consume less coal per unit of electricity generated, leading to lower emissions, lower cost of generation and higher efficiency.

CLP has brought in INR7.5bn as its upfront equity. The company has already imported the first consignment of equipment worth INR45m.

China-based Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation-III is the main equipment supplier for this project and Tiejun of China is carrying out the erection and commissioning at the site.

The project is expected to commence generation by December, 2011.
