After a sustained period of loss making operations Hatfield colliery, in Yorkshire, UK, has been put under administration. Accountants Ernst and Young have put the business put up for sale.

The colliery, which is owned by Coalpower Ltd who rescued it from insolvency in August 2001, comes with a £15 million government grant under the Coal Investment Aid Programme to support operating costs and projects. One of these projects would be the scheme to build an integrated coal gasification combined cycle power plant on the site (see MPS, May 2003) which has was granted planning permission earlier in 2003. The plan was ultimately to create a 432 MWe plant capable of producing hydrogen fuel, and possibly in a later phase sequestering CO2.
