The violence erupted between the two union groups – National Union of Minerworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) leading to the death of two workers.
Harmony Gold chief executive Graham Briggs said that the company regrets and condems the tragic and senseless loss of life in union rivalry, not associated with the operations of the mine.
AMCU, which is gaining ground around mining regions, is to take away membership from the country’s largest union, NUM.
Harmony was earlier hit by a strike at Kusasalethu mine 2 October 2012, when about 5,400 workers demanded higher wages costing the miners 20 days of production.
The mining company has later increased wage by 1.5%, pushing up its cost by an additional ZAR10m ($1.12m) a month.
