The electricity supply networks of the Channel islands of Guernsey and Jersey will be interconnected under a project announced by the Channel Islands Electricity Grid Co, a 50/50 joint venture between Jersey Electricity Co and Guernsey Electricity.

The project, due for completion at the end of July 2000, will include a connection through France to the European grid. The links will be built by ABB in a $85 million turnkey contract. The project involves laying 65 km of submarine cable between the two islands and the French coast and 70 km of underground cables across the two islands. The inter-island cable will have a capacity of 50 MWe while the cable between Jersey and France, with a capacity of 85 MWe, will supplement and existing 50 MWe cable.
