The southwest Chinese province of Sichuan is to build a power station on the Yalong river following the approval of a feasibility study by the China National Power Industry Corp.

The plant, to be called the Guandi Hydropower Station, will have a capacity of 1800 MWe. It will involve construction of a 168 m dam and a reservoir with a capacity of 694 million m3.

The project will be built in an area where Xichang City and Yanyuan meet. The hydropower scheme will submerge 45 ha and displace around 1000 residents.

Meanwhile, the Ertan Hydropower station, also on the Yalong river, a tributary of the Yangtze, began generating power for the first time in August. Ertan will eventually have a generating capacity of 3300 MWe. Construction of this project was supported by the World Bank.
