In March 2008, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a three part program that will significantly reduce emissions from the diesel locomotives of all types, line-haul, switch, and passenger rail. These rule changes will cut the diesel locomotive greenhouse gas emissions once it is fully implemented; particulate matter (PM) emissions by as much as 90% and Nitrogen Oxide emissions by as much as 80%.
