Green Energy Ohio plans to erect test towers on the shore of Lake Erie to know whether there is enough wind to generate an electricity-generating turbine. The project is expected to cost $6,300 million but the city administration is not worried about the cost, which it said could be managed.

Green Energy Ohio is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally and economically sustainable energy policies in the state, which wants to place the tower by the wastewater treatment plant, Ohio City Manager Anthony Cantagallo said.

It’s a good opportunity, Cantagallo, said. It will cost $6,300, but the money won’t come from city coffers. Many grants pay up to 50 percent of the total costs. I believe I can get all of the money through grants, gifts, etc.

And, Cantagallo said, the Lake Erie shore is well suited for wind power.

It’s basically a weather station to monitor wind speed, Cantagallo said.

Ward 3 Councilwoman Ericka Severino said that she wanted to see more information on the project before a decision is made.

Ward 5 Councilman James Trisket said that more and more windmills were powering homes for $17,000.

As per the American Wind Energy Association, residential systems are available from $5,000 to $50,000.
