Public Power Corporation, the dominant player in the Greek energy market has been given the go-ahead for the development of four new power plants with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW.

According to the authority, a lignite-fired plant is to be developed at either Ptolemaida or Florina in north-west Greece, a natural gas-fired plant at Megalopoli in the south of the country and another gas-fired unit at an as yet undisclosed site, possibly Keratsini, near Athens. A combined fuel gas/oil-fired plant is also slated for development on the west Aegean island of Evia. The developments will replace aging units.
