A bill brought before the Greek parliament aims to deregulate the electricity sector in line with European Union regulations. The proposed bill would allow consumers to choose an electricity supplier other than the state-owned PPC after July 2007.

The bill also sets out the framework for the entry of independent power producers to the country and tenders are expected to be issued for some 900 MW of capacity by the end of the year.

The European Commission has already warned of potential legal action after Greece missed a July 2004 deadline for liberalising its electricity market.

Last month the government also presented a gas deregulation bill to parliament.
