Nuclear

The Cuban government intends to continue to develop a nuclear power plant at Jacaragua despite objections from the USA. Work on the Russian-designed facility began 20 years ago but was suspended when the former USSR disintegrated.

Last month (May), Cuban and Russian officials agreed to review the possibility of completing the plant, 300 km from Havana. The USA has raised concerns about the safety of the Russian design. However Cuba has attempted to allay fears by inviting both UN and US representatives to discuss the design of the plant.
