The Kenyan government has said that it is confident that the country is currently moving towards a position of self-sufficiency in electric power production. With the encouragement of new independent power producers (IPPs), the nation hopes to have an adequate supply in place by the year 2002, the Minister for Energy has said recently.
The government is also fully committed to an increased liberalisation of the energy sector, he claimed.
Currently KenGen, the national utility, produces approximately 90 per cent of the total power output of the country. However, there are already two IPPs operating a combined capacity of 87.5 MWe.
By the year 2002, four additional IPPs will boost the total private sector capacity to over 330 MWe.
