ITOCHU subsidiary Tyr Energy and Sumitomo subsidiary Sumitomo Corporation of America will also join GE Energy Financial Services and project developer Caithness Energy to jointly own the $2bn wind power project, currently under construction near Arlington.

The wind farm will be built in three phases and will include installation of 338 units of GE 2.5xl wind turbine, development of 95 miles of roads and 167 miles of transmission lines.

GE will also provide operational and maintenance services to the wind facility, which is expected to be complete in 2012.

The facility is expected to generate enough energy to supply approximately 235,000 average US homes, and will avoid about 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Southern California Edison has signed three 20-year power purchase agreements to buy renewable energy generated by the Shepherds Flat wind farm.
