T J Glauthier, former deputy secretary and ceo of the US Department of Energy, has been appointed president and ceo of the newly-founded Electricity Innovation Institute.

The institute, an independent affiliated organisation of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has been established to manage public/private partnership research and development programmes aimed at developing clean, efficient and cheap sources of energy. The institute plans to engage the broadest possible base of public and private stakeholders, including state and federal government, academia, the green community, international agencies and foundations and the traditional energy industries. It will have full access to EPRI’s technical capabilities. The non-profit EII has been granted federal tax-exempt status as a scientific organisation.
