At the British construction Industry Awards ceremony, international consultancy Gibb of the UK has been commended for its role as principle designer of the Cardiff Bay Barrage in Wales.

The Cardiff Bay Barrage has been described as one of the UK’s most challenging and complex maritime civil engineering projects. A variety of creative solutions were needed for the many technical, construction and environmental issues — not least of which was working in the world’s second highest tidal range of over 14m.

The barrage has been specifically designed to impound the estuaries of the rivers Taff and Ely, transforming the polluted mudflats of the man-made Cardiff Bay into a 200ha freshwater lake with 12km of attractive waterfront, encouraging development and creating more than 15,000 jobs.

Key members of the barrage team were joined by specialists including, environmental scientists, hydraulic modellers and leisure planners, who worked closely with the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation.
