A huge combined desalination and power generation project is being developed on a build, own, operate, transfer (BOOT) contract basis by a Suez-led consortium.

At 2,750 MW and 800,000 cu m/day and tipped as the world’s largest desalination project, the Marafiq IWPP, located at Jubail in north east Saudi Arabia is set to cost $3.4 billion. The contract was awarded by the Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu and the development is backed with a 20-year power and water off-take contract. The plant is due on line in 2009.
