Ghana and Burkina Faso have announced an agreement to work together to use the resources of the Volta River Basin for their mutual benefit, particularly in the area of electricity generation, Reuters reports. Both countries have been hit by power shortages this year.

Drought cut the water levels in the river, reducing output from the Akosombo Dam power station, Ghana’s main source of power. This has led to suggestions from Ghana that Burkina Faso has been reducing water flow as it satisfies its own needs. The new deal is intended to prevent further friction.
