The move represents the completion of the phase I of the company’s planned charging infrastructure that will comprise 61 community charging islands in the state by the end of 2016.
The new EV charging islands feature a DC fast charger (CHADeMo/SAE combo plugs) as well as a Level 2 208/240-volt charger.
These are located in Atlanta, Dunwoody, Duluth, Lilburn, Lawrenceville, Athens, Augusta, Savannah, Alpharetta, Lithonia and Smyrna.
The customers can avail the EV charging services by using a new Georgia Power Card, powered by ChargePoint, or an existing ChargePoint card.
Besides developing public charging infrastructure, the company also offers EV charger rebates for business and residential customers and a special rate for EV customers.
The company launched dozens of plug-in electric hybrid vehicles as part of its statewide fleet and supports public engagement annual events such as the Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Roadshow and National Drive Electric Week.
It is also involved in electricity generation from nuclear fuel, coal, and natural gas, as well as renewable sources, such as solar, hydroelectric, and wind.
In September, US Department of Energy (DOE) granted $55m in funding to advance fuel efficient vehicle technologies, in a bid to cut down on foreign oil and curb harmful emissions.
The Department of the Army is also offering an additional $2.26m in co-funding to support projects focused on battery modeling technologies and computational fluid dynamics, through the Advanced Vehicle Power Technology Alliance with the DOE.
