With this approval, Georgia Power will purchase a 250MW of electricity from EDP with effect from 1 January 2016.

EDP will sell the electricity generated from its proposed the 151MW Blue Canyon II and the 99MW Blue Canyon VI wind power plants in Oklahoma.

Georgia PSC Commissioner Tim Echols said, "Securing a firm energy contract for wind power is rare, so kudos to Georgia Power and our staff for cutting this deal."

"By adding yet another form of renewable energy — already constructed — to our energy mix, we keep Georgia prepared for possible rising natural gas prices in the future and we avoid any construction cost overruns associated with building our own resource."
