The project developed jointly by the European Commission and the US Federal Aviation Administration to create environmentally-friendly air transport operation on transatlantic routes, will have GE Aviation providing the flight management system (FMS) that will report four-dimensional trajectories considering latitude, longitude, altitude and time to predict the optimum flight path.
This will assist in developing controlled time of arrivals, enabling aircraft to fly the Required Navigation Performance routes developed by GE’s Naverus business. The project, which is due to commence later this year and run for 10 months, will include the evaluation of hundreds of standard, passenger-carrying flights to Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s Runway 26 during its tenure.
The project will have twenty-five of the flights undergoing full gate-to-gate evaluations from Gotenorg Landvetter Airport to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, while evaluation for 75 of the flights will take place from cruise altitude to Runway 26 using short approaches to be developed within the project. SAS Scandinavian Airlines will use their Boeing 737 NG aircraft to conduct the flight trials.
In the Stockholm terminal area, aircraft will fly using a newly designed RNP-AR (Required Navigation Performance-Approval Required) procedure to Arlanda Airport’s Runway 26 that is anticipated to reduce flight distances by almost 20NM, resulting in fuel savings of around 100 kg and C02 reduction of more than 300kg.
