The 200,000ft² facility in Markham has been designed to further innovation and collaboration and to improve the efficiency, reliability and security of the electrical grids across the world.
The new facility, which includes 100,000ft² of production space, would help the company meet both current and future product demands.
In addition, the new center features a 60-foot video wall which allows customers to take an interactive, immersive look at GE’s full suite of energy management tools.
GE Canada president and CEO Elyse Allan noted that this facility is the third center for innovation in Canada this year.
"Executing and commercializing innovation is essential to driving economic growth and productivity. We appreciate the support and leadership from the Province of Ontario to make today’s opening a reality," Allan said.
Grid Automation general manager Juan Macias highlighted the significance of Markham as a place to GE’s new facility.
"We are investing in innovation, and this new facility demonstrates our commitment to ongoing research and development in substation and distribution automation as well as electrical grid protection and control," Macias said.
"As the global centre of excellence for grid automation, we will be collaborating on innovative solutions with customers, partners and academics around the world."
The Government of Ontario has provided $7.9m towards the project.
