The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued the licence for the construction of a laser enrichment facility, which would be built on the 1,600-acre site in the town of Wilmington.
The license allows GLE to construct a uranium enrichment plant using lasers conceived of by Australian firm SILEX and developed by GLE experts.
In addition, the license allows the facility to produce up to 6m single work units per year in the US.
The company said it has worked with the NRC and other the US departments and experts for several years to ensure the security of the laser enrichment technology.
Global Laser Enrichment president and CEO Chris Monetta said the company has developed this technology which could be one of the keys to the country’s long-term energy security.
"At a minimum, it could provide a steady supply of uranium enriched right here in the U.S. to the country’s nuclear reactors," Monetta added.
"These reactors provide approximately 20 percent of the nation’s electricity today and will continue to be an important part of the energy mix for decades to come."
Uranium producer Hitachi and Cameco hold 25% and 24% stakes respectively in Global Laser Enrichment.
