The news source quoted Mr Chubais as saying that Gazprom should adopt a new strategy to meet the growing demand for energy in Russia and avoid shortages.

Mr Chubais, as quoted by the Financial Times, said: I think that, in strategic terms, our priorities should not be Europe or China. The Russian domestic demand is growing a lot. I think that Russia needs to restructure its strategy in this sector.

The news source noted that Mr Chubais’s comments follow the massive and complicated privatization of the former electricity monopoly UES, which has created a free market in Russia for wholesale electricity.

Mr Chubais also added that Russia still lags behind in grid connections and needs to address this issue in order to attain higher economic growth.
