The 100MW Karbi Langpi hydro project has finally been assigned to Gammon India for completion by March 2003.
The project was originally taken up in 1979 by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), but work stopped in 1993 due to an inadequate cash flow and the successive failure of contractors appointed by ASEB to construct the dam. The Power Finance Corporation has agreed to provide ASEB with a loan of US$27.5M to complete the remaining work. An
advisory committee has been formed to oversee the progress of the work and a consultant will be engaged to supervise the use of funds meant for completion of the project.
