The company has announced the plan to build the plant after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mexican Electricity Board (CFE) to co-develop wind energy projects in Mexico.

Planned to be built in Puerto Altamira of Tamaulipas state, the facility will generate around 500MW per year, which will be supplied to the Mexican, US and Central American markets.

The construction on the facility is expected to commence in this month, and is scheduled to complete by the end of next year. It will be built on around 75,000m2 space.

The deal will also provide CFE with studying opportunities for participating in wind projects in which Gamesa has a stake in other Latin American markets and the US.

Gamesa Mexico & Latam managing director Hipólito Suárez said: "This MoU with the CFE highlights Gamesa’s commitment to the Mexican market, where, in addition to developing and on-selling wind farms, it supplies, installs and services wind turbines.

"Execution of this agreement will lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs in the tower manufacturing area and by nurturing a local supply chain capable of manufacturing major parts not only for the Mexican market but also for the US."

In line with the deal, Gamesa will also carry out renewable energy training and research activities through its Gamesa University located in Juchitán.

The company will provide individuals with knowledge in operations and maintenance tasks, under the training and research activities.

In November, Gamesa also secured a contract from renewable energy firm Ostro Energy to build two wind power plants, which have a combined power generation capacity of 200MW in India.

Under the terms of the contract, Gamesa will install 50 of G97-2.0 MW class S turbines at the Amba wind farm, located in the province of Madhya Pradesh as well as an additional 50 G97-2.0 MW turbines at the Nimbagallu wind farm, in Andhra Pradesh.
