An upcoming Energy Department funding bill for the $29.75 billion fiscal year 2006 Energy and Water appropriations budget is set to include $18 million for the FutureGen power plant.

In addition, the House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee has also dedicated $257 million to support the project over the next few years, in line with the White House.

The proposed near-zero emissions Futuregen coal-fired plant is to be built by the Energy Department at an estimated cost of $1 billion. It will capture and store carbon dioxide.

The move contrasts sharply with last year’s bill in which a White House request for $237 million in long-term funding was rejected.
