PAKISTAN’S MINISTRY OF WATER and Power has recommended the Finance Division that funding be allocated under the Public Sector Development Programme 2004-2005 to the US$1.6B Akhori dam on the Haro river.

According to a Finance Division source, the Ministry of Water and Power has asked the government to include one major dam in PSDP
2004-2005. The ministry official said that an updating of the feasibility study of the dam was underway and would be completed in one and a half months.
The Akhori dam, which will have a storage capacity of 7.4Bm3 is expected to generate 600MW of electricity while the proposed Kalabagh dam would have the capacity to generate 3600MW.
As many as 49,320 people would be displaced with the construction of Akhroi dam and the government would have to bear an environmental and resettlement cost of $300M.
