Fuel Tech’s proprietary TIFI Targeted In-Furnace Injection technology will be installed on a large coal-fired boiler to reduce problems caused by the formation of sulfur trioxide (SO3).

Chemical injection is scheduled to commence in the second quarter.

Fuel Tech chairman, president and CEO Douglas Bailey said the effects of SO3 formation are becoming increasingly problematic for power plants.

"SO3 is formed in the boiler by oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2), which arises from the combustion of solid and liquid fuels containing sulfur, and additional SO3 formation can also occur as SO2 is oxidized across the SCR catalyst," Bailey said.

"Our TIFI approach will achieve SO3 mitigation and slag control while addressing the environmental and operational effects of SO3 formation."
