In addition to EPA’s $710,000 Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant, Luck Stone will provide $1.1m from its own account to repower or replace 11 of its off-road construction vehicles with new, more efficient diesel engines and generators to reduce emissions.
The use of the new engines is expected to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides by 50% and particulate matter by 65% for each piece of equipment resulting in an annual elimination of 30.85 tons of nitrogen oxide, 2 tons of particulate matter, 11.93 tons of CO and 2.74 tons of hydrocarbons.
EPA regional administrator of mid-Atlantic region Shawn Garvin said that putting clean diesel engines to use will bring cleaner, healthier air for the workers and neighborhoods surrounding these plants.
“EPA is pleased to support Virginia Clean Cities’ newest initiative to improve air quality and public health for Virginia’s citizens,” Garvin said.
