Finland’s Fortum is to join the Prototype Carbon Fund of the World Bank, a programme that is designed to develop projects in developing countries or those which are economically impoverished to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Participants in the programme gain emissions credits from the World Bank which may be traded or used to offset emissions from other projects. Fortum is to invest FM 30 million ($4.7 million) in the fund, which currently totals some $135 million, and which will invest in around 20 projects over the next three years.
