Volume XII Issue 2

In this paper, an experimental study is carried out to find the distribution of pressure on a vertical sluice gate having an opening at the bottom. In order to create a high head upstream of the gate, experiments were conducted in a closed duct, connected to a supply line, being fed by two pumps connected in series. It is found that there is a departure from hydrostatic pressure distribution at the lower portion of the gate due to the accelerated flow through the gate opening. Empirical equations for the normalised pressure distribution are put forward and are used to determine the force acting on the gate.
