The company is planning to improve its Pine Bend Refinery located in Rosemount, Minnesota, US, and increase the processing capacity of the facility to around 320,000 barrels of crude a day.
Pine Bend Refinery upgrade will also result in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.
Flint Hills has submitted an application with the pollution control agency seeking a change in the air-quality permit so that it can go ahead with the upgrade work.
Under the project, the company will replace three heaters used to boil petroleum products and improve cooling towers.
Subject to approvals from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the company’s management, the improvement project is anticipated to start in 2014.
