HYDROPOWER

The first two units of the Ertan hydropower plant in China have begun generating electricity. The two 550 MWe units are the first of six, all due to enter service before the end of next year. When complete, the plant will have a capacity of 3300 MWe.

The station has been built on the lower reaches of the Yalong river, in Sichuan province. The project has been supported with a loan of $1.8 billion from the World Bank.
