Leveraging recently established technology and commercial partnership between both the companies, the new PV plant design will integrate First Solar’s thin-film CdTe modules and GE’s new ProSolar 1500 Volt inverter or transformer system.
First Solar has blended the new technology into its modules and made them suitable for 1,500-volt DC applications.
First Solar product management vice president Mahesh Morjaria said that collaboration will help the company to take power plant design to the next level.
"This is a significant step in establishing the next generation of utility-scale PV power plants," Morjaria added.
The combination of CdTe modules and 4MW 1500V inverter/transformer stations would boost the size of the solar array served by each inverter, while reducing the number of transformer stations required for each plant to convert the power from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) and feed electricity to a commercial electrical grid.
GE Power Conversion CEO Joe Mastrangelo said: "The inverters’ design enable our customers to apply engineering design that significantly increases efficiency of energy production."
