First Solar has acquired 100% stake in Maryland Solar, a 20MW (AC) photovoltaic (PV) solar power project in Maryland, US.

The solar PV project is expected to commence construction in the second quarter of this year and be completed in the fourth quarter of the year.

First Solar’s advanced thin film PV modules will be used in the construction of the facility.

Under a contract with FirstEnergy Solutions, the facility will sell electricity and renewable energy credits.

The facility will produce enough clean, renewable energy to power about 2,700 average Maryland homes, displacing about 23,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

First Solar Americas business development senior vice president Frank De Rosa said the company will help the state to meet its renewable energy goals.

"We are excited about moving forward on this project, which is expected to provide 125 construction jobs," Rosa said.

First Solar manufactures solar modules with an advanced semiconductor technology, and is a provider of comprehensive PV system solutions.
