Later this year a new high-temperature fuel cell is to be commissioned in Magdeburg, in former East Germany. It will be the first of its kind in the new German states. The system, supplied by MTU Friedrichshafen, is known as HotModule, and will be located in Guericke university in a demonstration power plant to be operated by IPF. The unit is fired by natural gas, generates 218 kWe and 170 kWt, at a conversion efficiency of 50 per cent, and produces no measurable emissions, other than CO2 in very low concentrations.
