Coal-fired supercritical first for the nation

Commercial operations are set to begin for the most advanced coal-fired power plant in Canada some 50 km southwest of Edmonton. The 450 MW Genesee 3 plant is a joint venture between EPCOR and TransAlta and uses clean air technologies to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to a minimum.

The facility uses a supercritical boiler in which temperature and pressure are far higher than conventional systems, boosting efficiency.
