On 27 September, construction officially began on the Tianwan 4, VVER-1000 (AES 2006) nuclear power plant in Jiangsu province, China.

Tianwan 4 is being built by Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation (JNPC) a joint venture between China National Nuclear Corporation (50%), China Power Investment Corporation (30%) and Jiangsu Guoxin Group (20%).

Russia’s St.-Petersburg Atomenergoproekt (AEP) is supplying the nuclear island, under a contract signed in August 2011. JNPC is responsible for the civil engineering, turbine-island and related infrastructure.

Tianwan 4, which is expected to begin operation in December 2018, will be operated by CNNC. Tianwan 3 is scheduled to start up in February 2018.

There are now 30 units under construction in China. A further eight units are expected to begin construction this year including AP1000s at Sanmen 3&4 and Haiyang 3&4.
