Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty have completed installing the final wind turbine of the Pen Y Cymoedd in South Wales, England.

Jones Bros and Balfour Beatty workers have now completed all 76-wind turbine installations at Pen Y Cymoedd, which is the largest onshore wind farm in England and Wales.

The milestone means Pen Y Cymoedd has taken another step towards operation, with the site expected to produce enough renewable energy to power 140,000 homes.

Jones Bros has jointly led the multi-million pound development of Pen Y Cymoedd wind farm in partnership with Balfour Beatty for client Vattenfall.

The civil works for the project began in February 2014, with Jones Bros leading on the construction of the concrete foundations for the 76 turbines, the laying of 56km of electrical cables, and the installation and upgrading of 80km of access tracks.

Eryl Roberts, joint venture project manager of the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project, said: “It has been a long process, but we are pleased that the final turbine has now been installed.

“Our team have installed 684 large components during the past year, overcoming the challenge of unpredictable weather throughout the project.

“We will now continue to bring the turbines into the operational phase step by step.”

More than 70% of all plant operatives have been sourced from within 30 miles of the Pen y Cymoedd site, and a total of 12 apprentices have been employed as part of the project.

The wind farm will utilise turbines from manufacturer Siemens, that have been specially selected to maximise the amount of energy generated. The turbine bases required between 520m³ and 610m³ of concrete.  A total of 6000t of reinforcement was used.
