The coal-fired Fiddler's Ferry power station in Warrington, UK, is to have flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment installed by owners Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), following government approval.

The FGD plant will operate as a chemical absorption process using the injection of a limestone slurry. Separate consent for a first FGD unit at the site was granted last June.

The move allows the plant to opt into the Large Combustion Plant Directive that would otherwise see the facility decommissioned by 2015.
