Operators at the nuclear power plant have removed the unit 3 generator from service on 12 November to begin the refueling outage.
Exelon employees and additional workers will perform maintenance activities and replace nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel during the outage.
After more than 4,000 inspections, maintenance activities and refueling, the unit 3 will run safely and reliably for the next two-year operating cycle.
About 1,600 additional workers will be employed by the nuclear station during the outage. At full power, Unit 3 can produce 867 million watts.
Located about 60 miles southwest of Chicago, the Dresden nuclear station’s two operating units can produce over 1,800MW, enough electricity to power nearly 2 million average homes.
