Low natural gas prices and economic and market conditions were cited as the reason for withdrawal.
Exelon Generation chief operating officer Charles G Pardee said, "While we have decided to withdraw our application for this particular project, Exelon’s presence in Texas is growing and will continue to grow."
In 2008, the company had submitted an application for a combined construction and operating license for the site.
It later applied for an early site permit in 2010, due to a changed licensing strategy which allowed the firm to go ahead with site evaluation and regulatory approvals, although start of construction had been postponed for up to 20 years.
Exelon operates over 4,000MW of natural gas and wind generation capacity in Texas, US after its merger with Constellation Energy.
