The plant was installed under Maryland’s Generating Clean Horizons initiative enlisting an investment of $50m.
The company owns and operates the solar plant on behalf of the state and will sell its electricity to the Department of General Services and the University System of Maryland under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley sought to highlight the state’s investment in solar power and the subsequent benefits it had accrued.
"With partners like Constellation, we will continue to make investments in innovative technologies that create jobs and allow us to strike a better and more sustainable future for our children," said O’Malley.
Constellation president and CEO Kenneth W. Cornew added, "Projects like this are part of our commitment to provide customers clean, affordable energy choices."
The company employed FirstSolar as the construction contractor for the installation, who used 220,000 of its advanced thin film PV panels for the plant.
