The plant is scheduled to be built by South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries Group & Construction, Japan’s Mitsubishi, and two local Vietnamese firms, in Binh Thuan, some 230km east of Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai was quoted by VietnamPlus as saying that the project brings considerable relief to the transmission of power from the north to the south, which suffers a certain degree of losses and insecurity.
EVN Power Generation Company chairman Nguyen Van Le said the plant will use environmentally friendly technology thereby meeting Vietnamese and international standards on emissions.
Built with a total investment of VND36.7tn ($1.7bn), the plant is scheduled to start its first 600MW turbine in 2017 and the second turbine in 2018.
The plant is projected to generate about 7.2 billion kWh per year for the national grid, once fully operational, according to the news agency.
