Electricity of VietNam (EVN) has proposed building 173 small hydro power stations with a total capacity of 2296MW nationwide to fully utilise the country's water resources.

The proposed stations, designed to be capable of turning out between 5MW and 30MW each, will generate an annual output of nearly 10.5BkWh.

They will be scattered throughout 30 provinces, mainly in the northern provinces of Son La, Yen Bai and Lao Cai, the Central Highlands provinces of Gia Lai and Lam Dong, and the central province of Quang Nam.
