The city of Everett in Washington, US, has voted to start the relicensing process for the Henry M Jackson hydroelectric project.

The project includes an earth and rock-filled dam on the Sultan river that creates Spada lake. The dam produces enough power for 28,000 homes and is the water supply for nearly two-thirds of Snohomish County, including the city of Everett.

The current licence, held jointly by the city and Snohomish County Public Utility District, expires in 2011, and a new application must be submitted in 2008.

A notice of intent is due to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by 1 December.
