Sweden’s Skanska has been awarded a US$150M construction contract for the 120MW Esti hydroelectric power project in Panama. The award was made by AES Panama, a unit of the Virginia-based AES Corp of the US. The Skanska lead consortium includes GE Energy Sweden, alstom Power Generation and Swedpower International.

The project involves a run-of-river power plant fed by two rivers and a dam. It is expected to come on line in November 2003 and will require the relocation of 16 families to new housing in the same area.

This will be Skanska’s second hydro contract on behalf of AES. In Panama, Skanska previously completed the Estrella Los Valles project and an extension of La Fortuna.
