E.ON UK has now contracted Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Foster Wheeler to design a post-combustion CO2 capture and compression plant, according to Energy Efficiency News.

Earlier, the company had planned to replace its existing coal-fired generators at Kingsnorth with two new high-efficiency 800MW supercritical coal-fired units and separate, recover and compress the CO2 from the flue gas, but put the plans on hold last year after a lack of government support.

But the UK Government approved E.ON and ScottishPower to undertake a front-end engineering design (FEED) study earlier this year. Foster Wheeler and MHI have already completed the pre-FEED and will now support the full FEED.

Foster Wheeler president and chief operating officer Umberto della Sala said that the company is delighted to continue to play a key role in this landmark project, planned to include one of the world’s first industrial-scale plants capturing CO2 from flue gases and the UK’s first supercritical units.

E.ON said that MHI’s CO2 recovery technology, which is developed jointly with Kansai Electric Power Company, is known as the KM-CDR Process and uses a proprietary KS-1 solvent for absorption and desorption.

So far, seven of MHI’s commercial plants for CO2 recovery from natural gas-fired flue gas have been installed and a further two are being designed and constructed.
