The Arkona offshore wind project in the German Baltic Sea has moved from the planning to the construction phase, E.ON has announced.

The 385 MW, €1.2 billion Arkona wind farm will be located 35 km northeast of the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea. E.ON has developed the project in partnership with Statoil and is planning to start commercial operations in 2019.

The two companies officially marked the start of construction with the laying of a cornerstone for the wind farm’s operations facility at the Mukran ferry port in Sassnitz on Rügen.

E.ON will install 60 Siemens 6 MW-class turbines on monopile foundations in water depths of 23-37 m. Installation of the large components at sea will take place in 2017.
