Under the MoU, the firms will cooperate on developing profitable energy storage solutions.
In selected regions and markets, the team will also assess and develop a potential business model for lithium-ion batteries for targeting applications.
In particular, the E.ON and Samsung will develop solutions for grid stabilization, industrial customers and appropriate energy systems.
E.ON chief markets officer Bernhard Reutersberg said: "The expansion of renewables, together with customers’ demands for decentralized solutions are driving the need for flexibility across the entire energy system.
"Lithium-Ion batteries are well suited to provide part of this flexibility due to their modular size, efficiency, simplicity and scalability."
The two firms intend to undertake the battery projects initially in the US, Germany, UK and Czech Republic and subsequently expand to other countries.
Samsung SDI ESS business team vice-president Sewoong Park said: "With the developing battery technology, Samsung SDI strengthens the product line-up and platforms for diverse ESS applications, and will continue to be a trustworthy partner to E.ON."
In August, E.ON and its partners commenced construction of the 5MW modular multi-megawatt, multi-technology medium-voltage battery storage system (M5BAT) on the premises of Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen University in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The project, which involves integration of different battery technologies, is expected to help improve the renewable energies in the country, the company said.
